Fiction Writing Tip #20

Chopped onions.

Every author needs to keep a bag of chopped onions in the freezer.

For real.

Because inevitably you are going to lose yourself in your story at least one afternoon out of every week and inadvertently neglect the dinner hour.

That’s where a bag-o-onions comes in handy. Simply run to your kitchen, dump some olive oil, garlic, and chopped onions in a pan, and let the sweet, savory, optimistic smell of cooking fill your home.

Your loved ones will suddenly relax, trusting that dinner is soon on its way.

Which it is. Just not so soon.
